Barcelona registered three wins from three in the Champions League as they beat a depleted Dynamo Kyiv to go top of Group G.Lionel Messi scored from the penalty spot inside five minutes and Gerard Pique headed home to secure an unconvincing victory.Messi is yet to score a goal from open play this season.A consolation tap-in goal was a deserved reward for a spirited performance from Kyiv.Dynamo Kyiv fielded a significantly depleted side, with only 13 first-team players travelling to Spain along with a further six youth players. Six players had tested positive for coronavirus at the Ukrainian club before the tie.It was an uncomfortable night for Barcelona, who struggled to assert themselves in the second half despite enjoying the lion's share of the possession.A valiant performance from 18-year-old Kyiv goalkeeper Ruslan Neshcheret on his first-team debut ensured the goal deficit was held to just one.Barcelona dominated for the opening 20 minutes and it seemed it would be a routine performance for Ronald Koeman's side, who have struggled to find form in La Liga but won both of their other group matches in Europe comfortably.Kyiv were tenacious and captain Viktor Tsygankov's 75th-minute goal made for a nervy finish to a tricky night for Barca, who looked ill at ease for large periods.Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was involved more than expected between the Barcelona sticks as he made his first appearance since recovering from a knee injury.Kyiv face another challenge in their next match in the Ukrainian Premier League against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Two from two in this year’s UEFA Champions League (UCL), both by multi-goal margins, continental competition has been a welcome distraction for Barcelona this season from their poor domestic form (W2, D2, L2). So far, both of Barcelona’s group stage games have seen a penalty goal scored by the visiting team on the day, and a dismissal for the host of the day (Y/Y1, R1), with both events arriving beyond the hour mark.
Including UCL and La Liga (LL) action only, Barcelona have won five of their last nine competitive home games. Three of those five matches saw the Catalan outfit net a penalty goal, contributing to the fact that Barcelona have specifically won the first half by a 2-0 scoreline in four of their last six UCL home wins.
Though Dynamo Kiev got their first UCL point this term (D 2-2), conceding a 2-0 HT lead to the lowest seeded side in the group bodes poorly. In practice this means that Kiev have now lost the second half 2-0 in both of their UCL group stage games this term.
Going back to September 2012, Dynamo’s ten-game away form in the UCL group stage reads: W2, D4, L4. Three of the defeats saw them trail 1-0 at HT, but they fared better in second halves across that quartet, avoiding defeat therein (2H: W0, D4).
Players to watch: Lionel Messi has hit a double in half of Barcelona’s last six UCL home wins. Three of his last four UCL braces have seen both goals arrive in the same half on the night.
Dynamo’s Viktor Tsygankov opened the scoring on matchday two, and in turn, five of his last seven goals have come during matches producing exactly four total goals.
Hot stat: None of Barcelona’s last 18 UCL home wins have seen them concede the lead once taken.
